Chevalier au Lion is inspired by an 11th-century Limousin lord and war hero, Gulpher de Lastours, who transformed a wounded lion into a loyal ally after nursing it back to health in Africa, thus inspiring the Arthurian legend of Yvain, the knight of the lion.
